Multiple answers, none of which are meant to flame:
--If Covid taught us anything, it's that we--performers and staff--don't have the right to expose our coworkers to our virulently-infectious diseases.
--Given the cost of the Gypsy tickets, do you really think that most of the audience will be content with an "okay" substitute, or for a diminished performer who can only give a faint shadow of their usual performance? It's hard enough to soldier on in a straight play if you're ill. If you're singing, you either hit the note, or you don't. I recognize that you, ARReith1982, are not troubled by the imperfection, but you're not the standard civilian.
--During the performances when we had come back from the Covid "pause," but the disease was still around, I found myself in a situation where I simply ran out of enough understudies to cover multiple simultaneous infections for my show unless we were literally covering one-understudy-for-each-actor or had even second or third covers. I doubt that most producers are willing or able to pay for that many extra people.
