| Yes, I know the 1977 movie of ''A Little Night Music,'' directed by Hal Prince (no less), is far from perfect, but I still enjoy it for 3 reasons. 1. It gave us the movie version of ''The Glamorous Life,'' which is one of my favorite Sondheim songs. 2. It gave Jonathan Tunick his Academy Award, for adapting Sondheim's glorious score for the silver screen. 3. It gave the great Diana Rigg, as Charlotte, the rare kind of showcase on film that should've landed her an Oscar nomination, at least. In 1994, when Rigg was giving her Tony-winning performance in ''Medea'' at the Longacre, I wrote her a fan letter. And because I read somewhere she was an avid fly fisher (!), I enclosed a video of ''A River Runs Through It.'' Rigg wrote back: ''Dear Mr. Wong: You couldn't have sent me a nicer present. I'm a mad keen fisherwoman and hadn't seen the film. And I have missed the best time for trout fishing in England this year. Many thanks! Diana Rigg.'' |
