I don't think the narrative, so to speak, is the point with The Wild Party. It has far more narrative than Follies, and more character/storyline strings to follow and vary things than Follies, and I think Follies is one of the great pieces of musical theater. Maybe we just need different things to sit through a 2/2.5 hour musical, but I think for exactly what it is, LaChiusa/Wolfe's Wild Party is a masterwork and a deeply compelling and entertaining musical. FWIW I have only see it live once, in the original broadway production. | |
