This week I saw "The End," a new film from writer/director Joshua Oppenheimer (The Act of Killing) and composer Joshua Schmidt (The Adding Machine). Sometimes I was interested in it, but my attention waned at times too. It's a fictional post--apocalyptic film from a director known mostly for his work in documentary, and the storytelling is almost combative to its score: the songs kind of act as anthems for a family trying to cope with a dire situation. On second thought, calling them 'anthems' might be too exciting a word for this family - they're mostly balmy serious ballads, though George Mackay as "The Son" jumps into the film with its one real upbeat song, a zippy, crazed number "Alone" that jolts the movie alive about a half hour into the 2.5 running time. It's essentially a one-set story, and I wonder how it would work on stage. There are some pretty incredible feats of filmmaking throughout, including some eye-popping choreography. |
