| Jesse Eisenberg first found fame with his Oscar-nominated portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher's ''The Social Network'' (2010). But at 41, he's matured into quite a filmmaker (and playwright), especially with his newest movie, ''A Real Pain,'' which he wrote and directed. Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin (from HBO's ''Succession'') play cousins who travel to Poland and join a Holocaust tour to visit the homeland of their recently deceased grandma. Eisenberg has said that ''A Real Pain's'' roots, in part, go back to ''The Revisionist,'' his 2013 Off-Broadway play at the Cherry Lane Theatre. He played a novelist who visits his 75-year-old second cousin who lives in Poland, and she was played by the Oscar-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave. Anyway, Eisenberg and Culkin have incredible chemistry in ''A Real Pain,'' like a pitch-perfect comedy team, as they negotiate life and loss as they reverentially visit World War II sites. The movie is often surprisingly funny, even as David and Benji deal with their depression and despair. At the Sundance Film Festival, Eisenberg won the top prize for his screenplay, and no doubt Culkin will be getting more awards buzz for his tour de force as the charismatic and complicated Benji. (And I can't wait to see Culkin kill it as Richard Roma in the new ''Glengarry Glen Ross'' revival on Broadway.) As a teenager, Eisenberg wrote a play about Woody Allen and got a cease-and-desist letter. And a couple decades later, he starred in Woody's 2016 film, ''Cafe Society.'' ... Meantime, Eisenberg loves musicals, and his next film is reportedly a musical comedy starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti. |
