Much of the show was actually improved for Broadway. It had a tighter framework (certainly a much better, cleaner ending). They cut two songs from the second act of the London production that needed to go and clarified the story a bit more. Sadly, a fair amount of clunky dialogue remains in the opening scenes establishing Jim and Tammy's relationship and I wish they could have fixed that. But despite any changes, I don't even know if great reviews would have saved this show. The advance was terrible and hardly any seats were sold to give a sign that this was a show people wanted to see. I think the marketing was godawful and putting it in The Palace was a massive, costly mistake. I find its failure heartbreaking as there was a lot to like in it and Katie Brayben's performance was thrilling. I hope they at least record it once it closes - the score and Katie's performance are well worth preserving (in my opinion). |
