Saw Lansbury play Rose at an in-the-round summer stock theater when I was in high school. Fabulous. She was sick at the time (announced as such) and blowing her nose and tossing dirty tissues onto the aisles as she made her entrances and exits (and audience members were scooping them up--souvenirs?). Her "Roses Turn" was pretty terrifying. Lansbury and Linda Lavin (an unforgettable unhinged Jack Russell terrier of a Rose) were the best Roses I've seen in person. I've also seen Peters (saw her at an Actors Fund performance and didn't think her voice was going to make it through the performance) and Lupone (at City Center--excellent performance but not nearly as riveting as Lavin and Lansbury). On screen, of course, Midler (way too big) and Russell (she gets a bad rap--she's a terrific Rose, IMHO). |
