| I thought Joel Grey wrote an excellent editorial, and while I enjoy the songs of "Cabaret", a part of me wishes the events it covered never happened so that the musical needn't have been written and that Joel Grey had become a star while going on an understudy in "Half a Sixpence" perhaps. Oh, I love the songs, and it's a great show and movie. I feel that same way about "Titanic", but the Holocaust and the sinking of that famous ship happened. "Cabaret" perhaps could have been made about Armenia and the Turks, but that's been under-reported historically so much that Hitler himself used that forgetfulness to embolden his nefarious plans. It pains me that history isn't taught about these things that somehow reaches and gets to many people nowadays. My late Dad during WWII was a sergeant in the Battle of the Bulge, and his unit was among those liberating Buchenwald; my Dad didn't speak too much about his wartime experiences in WWII, but he said people who said they didn't know what was going on in Germany and around those camps had to be lying, as the stench was so bad for many miles away. Hearing talk of mass deportations and places to keep people on grounds nowadays is horrifying; a few days after the election, as I sat in a restaurant, some older guys were talking at a nearby table (with inescapable projection yet!) and one actually asked if he thought Agent Orange was going to bring back "concentration camps". Very scary it was being expressed out loud in public. Thanks again, Joel Grey -- in addition to your writing, for actually experiencing your Emcee going through varying nuances of a memorable host from that epoch for many performances -- and conveying it quite vividly and brilliantly to audiences. |
