Rose is such a complex character - which is one of the things that makes Gypsy such a great musical. I don’t think she’s just a monster - no - but she is monstrous at times. I think she also loves her kids and wants something more for them. Yes, she’s vain, self-centered, and pushy - but that’s only part of the story. Rose is not caricature. That’s why it’s so tricky to play Rose’s Turn. You need a really great actress to pull off Rose’s conflicting feelings - her own thwarted ambitions and associated rage vs her love for her daughter and intense fear of abandonment at a vulnerable time in her life. I can’t wait to see Audra. I would have loved for Liza to have done it when she was in her prime. I did see Liza perform Rose’s Turn in concert once, but it wasn’t the same as if it was performed in the context of the show.

My favorite Rose(s)?
Patti may have sung it best, but Tyne acted the hell out of it. Tyne Daly’s Rose’s Turn really affected me. It was the only time I cried during that number. I saw it twice and thought she nailed it.
