Simon Godwin's recent production of Lear also cut the play down to around 2 and 1/2 hours (dramaturg Drew Lichtenburg's cuts). It was not the most elegant production of Lear I've seen nor the most memorable central performance but it was the most enjoyable and coherent production of the play I've seen.
I've never been a fan of Brannagh's work. I don't hate it but I have never found enough of anything in it that excites or interests me, even when it takes risks which it often does. |
