Though agree that cutting King Lear to two hours diluted some of the power of the play, I still found this production worth seeing for Branagh.
I have sat through full-length productions of Lear that literally put me to sleep. I would say that the deaths of Goneril and Regan happen so quickly you barely notice. Yet there are scenes between Edgar and his father and Lear and Cordelia that worked for me.
The best Lears I’ve seen have been Derek Jacobi and Ian McKellen. The worst productions I’ve seen were with Glenda Jackson and Sam Waterston.
I hope Branagh tries The Tempest next. Or a comedy. |
