There's an excellent live recording by B.J. Ward devoted to Barer's lyrics. She provides a lot of bio information between songs. He was a brilliant lyricist, admired by Sondheim, but his career seems to have been derailed by bad choices and a deep eccentricity. There's also a collection The Time Has Come, with Barer songs from Clooney, Marcovicci, Feinstein, etc. OOP, but worth seeking out. (Also of note: Pousse Cafe, his collaboration with Jerome Weidman and Duke Ellington. 1966, three performances.) |
