Vanessa Redgrave was roundly booed (during the ceremony) and condemned when she won her Oscar in 1977 and in her acceptance speech made reference to “Zionist hoodlums” in the same year she had produced and narrated a pro-Palestine documentary calling in part for the end of Israel (yes this has all been going on that long, and time immemorial before). She was nominated again years later, but there is little doubt that had social media been around in the 70s she never would’ve gotten that award. People should feel free to speak their mind - no one’s viewpoints should be censored - but everyone else has the right to make up their own mind what the consequences will be. Despite the fact that I see people already putting their Sunset Boulevard tickets up for sale on StubHub and other resale sites, this is all small potatoes. We’re in for some very rocky times ahead, and when people look back on these next four years, Nicole Scherzinger now inevitably losing a Tony award next spring will not even be in top 10,000 examples of fallout. |
