According to UPI, the book and score wins were announced on nomination day. It mentions a “recent rule change” that accounted for only one eligible entrant in a category, but that the award must be “merited by quality.” So I guess the nominating committee made the decision in that case?
I remember Harold Prince lobbied hard to have the revised book for his Show Boat revival declared eligible that year, but that request was denied. |
