Judy Kaye, of course, started as the understudy and successfully took over the role of Lily Garland, but it was Madeline Kahn who was Tony-nominated for the role.
I'm surprised that Betty Comden's estate allowed that re-writing of "The Legacy" since she was equal partner in their work. I don't know if folks ever quite noticed, but Comden and Green I don't think ever said publicly something like "Oh, Betty came up with this line. Adolph had this idea". They pretty much functioned as a partnership and took credit for things as a unit. (Someone correct me if I'm mistaken.) But when I met Betty Comden some years ago and spoke to her, she mentioned a number of times "My partner and I" in the conversation about some of their work. |
