1979: I only caught the national tour of ''On the Twentieth Century,'' but happily Judy Kaye and Imogene Coca, both Tony nominees, were all aboard, reprising their wonderful work on the road. But the show's real scene-stealer might've been Robin Wagner's sleek and silvery Art Deco, Tony-winning train set. Alas, the one factor that almost derailed the musical at times was Rock Hudson, who played Oscar on tour. Unfortunately, he wasn't up to the vocal demands of Comden & Green and Coleman's glorious score, which is why I imagine they cut Oscar's 11 o'clock number, ''The Legacy,'' one of my favorites.

2015: The highlights of the Roundabout revival were Kristin Chenoweth, as Lily Garland, and Andy Karl, as Bruce Granit. With her vibrant vocals and flair for comedy, Chenoweth won the Outer Critics and Drama Desk prizes that season, and should've taken the Tony, as well. And I'd have given the Tony to the comically klutzy Karl, too. My biggest letdown was this revival had Amanda Green, Adolph's daughter, rewrite ''The Legacy'' as a love song to Lily (''Because of Her''). The original ''Legacy,'' Oscar's litany of prized possessions, described in fun rhymes, was so much hammier and more humorous as his big solo.
