I was at the City Center "Ragtime" production Wednesday and I can report that Ms. Levy is indeed one of the weakest links n this production. She is a second rate actress who can, when called upon, deliver a belt. But that's about all she's got. Joshua Henry is the real standout in this modestly staged production. Besides Levy, the other subpar performer in the cast is Nichelle Lewis, who was in the recent touring production of "The Wiz." How she got this gig is unfathomable. A meek presence on stage, she doesn't come close to delivering the kind of powerful performance that the role of Sarah demands. Brandon Uranowitz has done good work in the past, but he shamelessly hams up the role of Tateh. Even though this production of "Ragtime" doesn't match the power of the original production, it's still a fitting reminder of what was possible in the glory days of the American musical. If you care to see for yourself how we have plunged into the dark ages, I suggest you head over tp "Swept Away," and you will find out bad things are now. |
