Down though I am on the general run of musical theatre nowadays, I can mention a surprising number of musicals in the last 25 years that I think can be counted as important and possibly classic additions to the canon. In no particular order, The Light in the Piazza, Urinetown, Adding Machine, Fun Home, The Band's Visit, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels come to mind, and I may be forgetting one or two (and there may be some that I haven't seen that I might include if I had seen them). I wish I could include Road Show but I think Bounce was somewhat better though it certainly fell frustratingly short in too many ways. And I also wish that I felt that Here We Are should be included. I know I am in a tiny minority, but I would not include Ragtime for reasons I've discussed at length here in the past. It's sad to me because I love the novel, and I think it could have been adapted into a great musical, and there is a good deal that I do think is excellent in the musical, but too much that I think is way too wrongheaded. |
