I think Jackie Hoffman was talking about the gradual disappearance of people in the audience who she thinks appreciate Jackie Hoffman (“gays and smart people”). But I think there is a definite difference in experiencing a Broadway show with and without its initial cheerleading squad in the audience. How could it not? It would be like listening to a classic TV sitcom without its laugh track.
