| All due respect to these super talented performers... I was just expecting from the title, and hoping while there's still people left that are eligible, that it would be a cast of people with a history of doing Sondheim shows while he was alive. Whether it's 1 show in a lead role, or several shows... I'm always happen for a chance to hear new takes on Sondheim songs, or to bring his work to audiences who might not be familiar or interested unless so-and-so performer brings it to them... it seems odd how many people in this don't have any association with him. Imagine if they'd found a way to get a cast of the people who are still actively associated with him. Any number of the following: Bernadette, Mandy, Donna, Patti, Nathan Lane, Raul, NPH, Audra, Michael Cerveris, Lonny Price even, Len Cariou, Francis Jue, Annaleigh, BD Wong, Alex Gemignani, Joanna Gleason, Chip Zien, Betsy Joslyn, Danielle Ferland, Westenberg & Crosby... Vanessa Williams, Victor Gardber ... Whoopi ... Imelda... Patina Miller, Rachel Zegler even. Even a rotating cast would lend itself very well to keeping it exciting and keeping people coming back to see old friends, and combos of them, they hadn't seen. Even Stephen Colbert would surely drop in for a weekend. Surely Gyllenhaal would too. I know it is highly unrealistic to get this kind of group together, and many of them are of course booked with other broadway shows right now. But I bet they could have made this a sell out event for 1-2 months rather than what it'll likely be which is a revue with good word of mouth that limps along for 3-6 months. It just seemed like that would be the point and selling point of the show. I guess it isn't. |
