I don't know how revues do in the West End, or if only ALW song revues do well there... but Broadway doesn't have a history of hit revues running to packed houses for a long time. This is a big part of why I assumed the very existence of this revue, plus its title, was that as a loving tribute to Sondheim this show would be his "old friends", or old friends of his musicals major productions, coming together to sing the songs. Unless it's none theater music, like Ain't Misbehavin, and even then there aren't that many that run very long, with or without fired up audiences coming to them. Sondheim gets a lot more revues made of his work than most composers do, so we have more to judge from... but I don't think there's much thirst for paying broadway prices to see a revue that isn't tied to the career of an electrifying and super famous choreographer and while their fame/legend is still very felt (like Jerome Robbins Broadway and Fosse). While there's plenty of evidence that there is a passionate but limited audience willing to pay enough to keep a Broadway run of most Sondheim shows going for more than 6 months (more likely 3, sometimes 9-12), I don't think the popularity of revues of his work say anything about the audiences for his actual shows. |
