(New York, NY) – Love In Idleness, a new musical comedy about a pharmaceutical scientist who invents the title drug to reignite passion in his long-term relationship with a drag performer is set for a limited Off Broadway engagement this fall. Written by Jay Baer, with music by Andrew David Sotomayor, and directed by Kyle Pleasant, the production will run Thursday, November 21st – Sunday, November 24th at Actors Temple Theatre, 339 West 47th St. Love in Idleness is a full-length musical comedy inspired by A Midsummer Night's Dream set in 2025 NYC. Obie, a scientist for a pharmaceutical company, invents the title drug to reignite the spark in his long-term relationship with Tim, a drag performer at New York's hottest gay club. Things go hilariously wrong, yielding absurdly mismatched pairings between Tim, Obie's coworker and friend Hermione, her boyfriend, and more. While Obie grapples with these mismatched lovers, an evil right-wing group is conspiring to harness the drug's power to serve its diabolical purposes. In the end, non-pharmacological love reigns and all is well. "I set out to write a show that would address important subject matter that would also provide for a wildly fun night at the theater," says writer Jay Baer. "Love in Idleness is dead serious about LGBTQ oppression and the challenges of keeping long term relationships healthy - regardless of gender or sexuality - but it's also brimming with laughs and gorgeous music. I'm so excited to give audiences a double uplift!" The cast of Love In Idleness features Stanton Morales, Mikey LoBalsamo, Josey Miller, Liam Searcy, Brett Bainer, Michael Hegarty, Duncan Smith, Haley Izurieta, Nicholas Joseph C. Ochoa, Jackson Kanawha Perry, Dan Follett, Jesse J Potter, and Kyle Munson. Love In Idleness features scenic design by Josh Iacovelli, lighting design by Mike Wonson, sound design by Ray Schilke and costumes by Sarah Marshall. Kyle Pleasant directs and choreographs, assisted by Drew Minard. The Musical Director is Robbie Torres. Casting is by Lara Hayhurst. Sarah Adams is the Production Stage Manager. Production staff also includes Matthew Palmer and Nilton Emilio. Jay Baer (Book/Lyrics) Jay Baer grew up in Jersey, with a deep love for Broadway, and has such great memories of attending productions like Hello Dolly with Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway. After earning his A.B. from Harvard College in 1977 and his M.D. from UCSF in 1981, he spent 40 years in psychiatry while fulfilling his musical passion by singing tenor with the Boston Gay Men's Chorus. In 2021, Jay retired from medicine and was free to pursue his love for theater. Recent credits include writing song parodies for the Chorus, such as "Santa's Turn" (2018), and creating three musical parody shows (The New Provincetown Follies, Dating and Other Natural Disasters, and Resistmas!). His first original musical, Love in Idleness, was written with composer Andrew David Sotomayor. He also performed in The Fantasticks at the Provincetown Theater in 2023. Andrew David Sotomayor (Music) is an award-winning musician based in NYC. Music directing credits include Tootsie and Escape to Margaritaville (First National Tours), and Curvy Widow (Off-Broadway Premiere). As a composer, he has provided music and lyrics for the original musicals 50 Shades of F***d Up, Committed, Sarah Crewe, The Circus Animals, Guardians, and Third Party Ruling, as well as scores for the audiobook The Influential Voice, the short film Cuba 1961: A Love Story, and the independent feature film, BX3M. A passionate educator, he has enjoyed several years on the teaching faculty at Paper Mill Playhouse - teaching at both their July Conservatory and August Intensive. He is a proud graduate of Stetson University, Florida. Kyle Pleasant (Director/Choreographer) directorial and choreographic work includes Chicago, Cabaret, Hair and Hedwig and The Angry Inch at Peregrine Theatre, Spring Awakening at The Roxy, the world premier of Regarding the Disappearance of Amy at Playwrights Horizons, and David at off broadway at AMT. Along with Pippin at Marymount Manhattan College and most recent productions include Caroline or Change, Ragtime , West Side Story, A Chorus Line, Sweet Charity and Titanic. Pleasant has set work for The Young People's Chorus of New York, The Boston Conservatory, Boston Gay Men's Chorus, Career Transitions for Dancers, and the Only Make Believe Organization. His work has been seen at New York City Center, MoMA, and The Vineyard Arts Project, the OWN Network, ABC's The View and at The White House for First Lady Michelle Obama. He is a Broadway World Boston and National Youth Theater Award Winner for Direction and Choreography. Most recently, Kyle was recognized with an Honorable Mention for the Excellence in Theater Education Tony Award. Kyle is the resident choreographer at Rosie's Theater Kids, Rosie O'Donnell's school for the arts. He is on faculty at Marymount Manhattan College, The Professional Performing Arts School and previously the Assistant Program Director to Chet Walker at the Jacob's Pillow Jazz Dance Program on faculty at The Boston Ballet School.
