Nearly every single recent musical currently on Broadway had either an out-of-town tryout, previous Off-Broadway production, or transferred from the West End. The only show that truly opened "cold" in the last 5 years is MJ. (You could maybe make the case for Maybe Happy Ending, which premiered in Korea, but with a different cast and director.) Everything else from the last few seasons, though, falls into the tryout category:
Moulin Rouge - Boston
The Outsiders - La Jolla
Water for Elephants - Atlanta
The Notebook - Chicago
The Great Gatsby - New Jersey
A Wonderful World - Chicago
Death Becomes Her - Chicago
& Juliet - West End and Toronto
Back to the Future - West End
Cabaret - West End
Sunset Blvd. - West End
Tammy Faye - West End
Suffs - Off-Broadway
Hell's Kitchen - Off-Broadway
Once Upon a Mattress - Encores |
