This is false. Unless by "mid 90s," you just mean the 1994-1995 season. In both the seasons before and after that, you had more new musicals, including ones with new scores. I mean, in the season right after Sunset Boulevard you had Rent, Bring in Da' Noise, Bring in Da' Funk, Big, and State Fair, among others. I count 7 new musicals that season (1995-1996). And I'd say at least two of those were radical (for the time) takes on the genre, and one which was a smash, "can't get a ticket" success (neither of which I would say about any of the new musicals from this past season).
To your point, we did have a lot more new musicals last season - there were actually 15, not 10. And 11 of those had new scores. But the 94-95 season was a bit of an outlier - certainly not representative of the "mid 90s." |
