Is Mimi written to be specifically Panamanian?

I don't think Daphne being latina but specifically from Panama had anything to do with the character or how it was intended to be played or cast. I mean the Panama part. I don't think the Rent people have ever been public (or, it seems, private) about their effort to casting Mimi as anything more specific than "latina", when it comes to ethnicity.

Connie is different because she's based on a real person who created the role. But the text refers to her Chinese race, I believe, but never mentions her being part Indian. How one would even know that I'm not sure, I don't recall hearing or reading it and it's not in her Wiki. But sure. However I don't think being half East Asian and half South Asian is acknowledge or at all intended in the future casting. And for the context of how the role is written and how her race plays into it, it seems to me that any Asian actress who is short would be appropriate casting, no?
