Well... I couldn't disagree more. I think it is a sophisticated and impressive piece of work There is no work that pleases everyone, so I am not suggesting you need to like it because you don't. Staging it would be a monumental undertaking, and obviously, if it were to move forward, the concept album would evolve. If one looks for "musical theatre" in this, one is likely to feel they have not found it. (No melodies? I beg to differ. Maybe not according to the supposed "rules" of musical theatre, but it is well to remember that there are no such rules. I heard plenty of melody for my taste. ymmv. Similarly, if one expects no surprises vis-a-vis Hamilton, they will also be disappointed. Some familiar (but I would say evolved) LMM signatures, but lots of new approaches, new genres, etc. One final note. The "lyric book" is indispensable if you want to understand how the songs relate to an (also obviously to evolve) arc. Don't leave home without it. ETA: I had not seen the other thread on this. For my part, I wouldn't mind seeing this one collapse into the other. |
