If a role isn't written to be ethnicity specific (or fulfilling a director's vision for a given priduction), I think it it ridiculous to care what ethnicity plays a role. I'm all for allowing anyone to play any role if the creatives think they fit it the best. Rent, which I adore, irritated me as the run ran on because most replacements were cast to look like the original cast member. Mark is probably white, Mimi is probably Hispanic, and Joanne is probably black, but all the other parts could realistically be played by any race. Annoying that they weren't allowed. In Chicago I was irritated that it took ages for a black woman to be cast as Roxie. Unless it matters as a part of the show (a color blind Show Boat would be somewhere North of silly), it doesn't matter.
