Oh, and yes - the "Spelling Montage" as it's called, where time speeds up and slows down etc, is all mapped out in the score/script. Likewise Jesus appearing to Marcy is in there as a permanent part of the show.

The only truly unplanned element of the show is what happens with the audience volunteer spellers. But even then, one of them always gets to spell "cow" (which leads to the song "Pandemonium"). The script has an appendix of a whole bunch of words/definitions/sentences that Panch can give to the audience spellers, and also some strategies as to how to guide those sequences (for instance, for really good spellers who aren't easily stumped, to make sure they can be stumped). I think Jay Reiss, the original Panch, is responsible for much of that material. The sentences in which the words are used are, IMO, some of the funniest material in the show.

And one of the odd quirks of the show is for the band (and the actors, but especially the band) to be ready with each of the "goodbye" songs as each of the guest spellers get out - as of course it's often hard to predict when that will happen. (The goodbyes for the actual characters are set, but the guest speller ones depend on how they do with the spelling.) Part of the fun of staying on your toes during the show.
