| ''Saturday Night'' is Jason Reitman's entertaining re-creation of the backstage chaos behind ''SNL's'' first broadcast in 1975, and it's full of fun and uncanny performances: Gabriel LaBelle as Lorne Michaels, Dylan O'Brien as Dan Aykroyd and Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase, plus Broadway's Andrew Barth Feldman as Neil Levy and J.K. Simmons as Milton Berle. But ''Saturday Night'' is missing one of the original ''SNL'' Not Ready for Primetime Players: George Coe. Broadway buffs probably might know Coe, who appeared opposite Angela Lansbury in ''Mame''; played Owen O'Malley in ''On the Twentieth Century,'' and originated the role of David in ''Company.'' Asked why the movie left out Coe, Reitman told IndieWire: ''The trick was that he was older. We always saw this as a movie about generational shift and one generation ripping television out of the hands of another. We always just thought, “Well, this is confusing because George is one of the kids, but he’s not a kid,” and we didn’t want that to be visually confusing. So unfortunately, George Coe got left out of the script.'' Reitman adds: ''But also, Eugene Lee is not on screen, and that’s a thing that bums me out still, but there’s 80 speaking roles already. Eugene Lee, who is a genius production designer who did extraordinary work on Broadway [and won 3 Tony Awards for 'Candide,' 'Sweeney Todd' and 'Wicked'], did his first TV show with 'Saturday Night Live' and created an iconic sound stage that exists to this day ... but at a certain point, there’s only so much room.'' |
