| Also Martin would have been 44 at the time of filming, much too old for the camera for Nellie. Glenn Close suffered from same problem. Nellie needs to be young and naive for her prejudice to work, otherwise it gets awkward IMHO. Not much more than a year later, Martin was playing a postulant in The Sound of Music and there were a lot of concerns that she was too old for that role. Even when they were hoping for Doris Day, there were also concerns that Day was too old at 35 (her real age in 1957). Gaynor was definitely age-appropriate (though I am personally not crazy about her performance in the film). |
