This is my very favorite number of hers. This is The Johnson Rag from "The I Don't Care Girl" and it is completely out of period for the film, but features stunning Jack Cole choreography. (Skip to 1:26 if you don't care about the Oscar Levant intro.) Mitzi started to talk about how difficult this number was when she was interviewed by Robert Osborne, but he cut her off and changed the subject (one of the very few times I didn't like his style). It was all about counting.
We used to watch her annual TV specials, and if you have not seen it, the compilation DVD "Mitzi: The Razzle Dazzle Years" is a fantastic watch. A friend toured with her in the late 1970s and had nothing but good things to say about her.
RIP to Mitzi Gaynor, a legendary lady. |
