| Speaking of the role of the Shogun's Mother, I wanted to take a moment to remember Alvin Ing. He originated the part and first sang ''Chrysanthemum Tea'' in the 1976 production of ''Pacific Overtures'' on Broadway. Ing reprised his role in ''Pacific Overtures'' at East West Players in L.A., and then nearly 3 decades after originating it, reprised it again in the Roundabout's ''Pacific Overtures'' revival in 2004. He also toured in the original ''Flower Drum Song'' (1958) and over 4 decades later, appeared in David Henry Hwang's revised 2002 version of ''Flower Drum Song'' on Broadway. In 2021, Ing gave a wonderfully comprehensive interview (below) and then passed away a couple months later at age 89. What an amazing Asian-American performer and pioneer he was! | |
