I often step outside at intermission, and extremely few people do it nowadays. Almost no one is smoking outside anymore -- maybe 4 or 5 people at the most. A lot of shows warn you as you are stepping outside that you need to show your ticket when you re-enter, but very few actually ask for it in my experience because there are so few people stepping outside that the security people recognize who is coming back in. Unless there was some show that had a big crowd exodus for some reason (like the air conditioning was broken), I don't know if I'd have the guts to try to second-act.

On the other hand, I think the Beaumont may be fairly easy to second-act, because there are so many doors to the outside, and the ticket-taking/ushers/security are right at the entrance to the auditorium rather than at the multiple entrances to the lobby. So there are hundreds of people milling around the lobby at intermission to use the bathroom/get a drink/stretch their legs, and it would be pretty easy to blend in. Are there other theaters set up that way? I feel like the typical Broadway theater setup is that there's only one way in from the outside, and there's security stationed at that entrance. The Village Voice article linked to the NY Times article mentioned earlier says that there's a side-alley entrance for the Broadhurst and the Barrymore, and that there's a rear entrance to the Imperial, but I'm not sure if that's how they are currently set up or not.

A show that immediately comes to mind to second-act would have been Paradise Square. Come at intermission, see Joaquina Kalukango sing her heart out with "Let It Burn," then go home.
