I attended the very first preview of The Fields of Ambrosia in London and enjoyed the score and performances very much. The problem with the show was, I think, that it's about a traveling executioner, and capital punishment does not exist in Great Britain. There were numerous walkouts at the interval, and the show closed quickly after getting terrible reviews, and some future panned musicals were compared to The Fields of Ambrosia. Spoiler: There is a song called "Alone," sung by a character named Jimmy, who has just been assaulted, presumably raped, in the execution wagon by a prisoner, and the first line of the song is "If it ain't one thing, it's another." The audience howled, though the actor singing it made it a showstopper. There are moments of dark comedy, but it seemed like the plot was meant to be taken seriously. Joel Higgins and Christine Andreas were outstanding in the leads, and there are some terrific songs on the London recording. The show had played earlier at the George St. Playhouse in New Brunswick, NJ, where it was well-received, but the London production made it doubtful that a Broadway version would occur. Am very interested that there's revived interest in it, as the score is a worthy one.
