You will need to see the first to really understand the second.
As for the first - my impression - was sitting there for 1 hr and 45 minutes wondering what in the hell I was watching, and then in the last 20 minutes, it all came together in a masterful stroke of genius. I took a while but I now see it as a fantastic work and really wish they had just let it be. But alas, Hollywood.
