It sounds a bit similar to the hiring and subsequent firing of Henry Goodman to replace Nathan Lane as Max Bialystock, although in that case the role was firmly set as a comic tour-de-force and from the many comedies I have seen him in onstage and on the screen, Henry Goodman is a very funny performer. Maybe not Nathan Lane exactly, but very funny in his own style. It looked like they really wanted a carbon copy and hired actors who would give them that.
Perhaps people who saw the replacements would disagree? I welcome alternate opinions! |
