While the show was at Goodspeed in its first production, Mike Nichols came to see it. He loved what he saw so much that he volunteered to be its lead producer for a Broadway production. Among his many suggestions, ideas, provisions... whatever you want to call them... were the hirings of a new set designer, a new choreographer and the biggest of them all—his urging the casting of Dorothy Loudon as Miss Hannigan. Maggie Task took the task of being villainous too seriously with little attempt to dig for humor. The Hartford Courant review noted that Task was “neither menacing nor funny.” The role called for someone with comedy in their bones. Enter Ms. Loudon.
