It's always a treat to meet a fellow ''Civil War'' buff. I've always enjoyed Wildhorn's wondrous gift for melody in his musicals.

A revised version of ''The Civil War,'' retitled ''For the Glory,'' played the Majestic Theatre in Gettysburg, Pa., in 2006.

Wish I could seen that, and the tour with Larry Gatlin, who impressed me when he did ''The Will Rogers Follies'' on Broadway.

''The Civil War'' isn't a traditional linear musical. It's more of a song cycle of musical numbers inspired by letters and accounts of the Civil War, with stories of courage, struggle and sacrifice. ''The Civil War'' might've shot itself in the foot with its title: It's too literal, and impossible to capture such a historic event in 2 hours or so. I prefer ''For the Glory,'' but it's still a musical history lesson of sorts I still loved. And the chorus singing that score sounded so glorious.
