Sunset Blvd WITH ONE LOOK key question
Posted by: EvFoDr 09:02 am EDT 10/12/24

Does anyone know if, on Broadway, Nicole is singing the song in its original key, and without the key change DOWN at the end? I heard a clip from London where it sounded to my ears that there was no key change down. But I am not sure if she started the song in its original key.

Something I never understood is why they left this downward modulation in the song after Glenn Close. I get it, she's a big Hollywood star, and ALW adjusted the song to cater to her vocal limitations. But it's so much more exciting to hear it as done by LuPone and Streisand. Certainly Elaine Paige and Betty Buckley could have done the original. Yet on Buckley's SB sampler disc she has the lower version. Same on the Linda Balgord tour highlights. I am left to assume that the lower version was used for all of the original Broadway run and subsequent tour.
