| Do it the first night after a person passes. I don't think they need to consult with peoples' families. It's not a memorial service. There's nothing to see or hear. The League just needs to send a few photogs to capture the moment and the TV stations can choose to send a cameraperson and/or reporter. And I think flashing blinding photos of the deceased on video marquees is counterproductive. The point of the gesture is that Broadway is in mourning. It's like covering up the mirrors when you're sitting shiva. It's the darkness that makes the point. And like all things, do it sparingly or it risks becoming meaningless. If everyone who'd ever done a Broadway show had the honour bestowed, they'd be dimming them every night. Personally I didn't know Adrian Bailey's name until his passing. And as has been pointed out, Maggie Smith's Broadway career was fleeting. Gavin Creel, on the other hand, was a regular and integral part of the community and more than deserves the gesture. Although in a way, I also kind of feel it should be kept for legends: Stritch, Lansbury, Rivera, James Earl Jones. |
