McNeal’s Set Design

Michael Yeargan who has worked on Bartlett Sher’s productions in the past had once again offered audience members an unnecessary visual obstruction in his set for McNeal.

I had a very good first row seat for the play last but during a key scene with McNeal and his son, the two actors were partially obscured for several moments of dialogue by a huge chair that is placed in the front center of the stage and serves no purpose whatsoever.

Yeargan who also designed the LCT production of The King and I placed a long piece of furniture on stage left of the stage so that if you sat house right orchestra near the front you couldn’t see the King and Anna’s bottom legs and feet when they performed Shall We Dance?

It’s infuriating.

I enjoyed the play and Robert Downey Jr. and the rest of the cast though I’m not sure what it ultimately has to say about the use of AI in creating a novel. Downey is very good as the exasperating alcoholic writer but he looks very fit for someone who is at death’s door.
