Is James Kirkwood's DIARY OF A MAD PLAYWRIGHT fact or fiction?

His book is a behind the scenes diary of the rehearsal period (and out of town tryouts) for his play LEGENDS starring Carol Channing and Mary Martin. Apparently there was a LOT of bad behavior going on, especially from Carol Channing. Over time I've read criticism of the book saying that most of the events were made up by Kirkwood. Does anyone have any thoughts?
