Rent. I love Rent. I think the first act is wonderful, realistic, and seemingly occurs in real time. We get to witness a magical wintry night in the life of our protagonists, events and emotions flowing together the whole time.
But the second act... ugh. True, it satisfyingly completes a full emotional circle. But the events are unlikely, jump randomly forward in time, motivations never shown. And then having Mimi die then live is an emotional cop-out. Roger losing Mimi but then reconciling with Mark through his pain is more realistic, more logical, and more heartfelt than the ending the show actually got. |
