It was only in the 1970s that playbills starting to regularly include photos of the actors. For some time after this became common, it was still rare to see photos of ensemble members, and I think virtually never were photos of standbys and understudies in playbills. Perhaps if there was a moderate name serving as a standby or understudy, there might be a photo, but that was rare. And I think it wasn't till the 1980s or maybe later still that you started to see bios for understudies. If you go back in time, you see far fewer bios, both of cast members and staff members, than you see nowadays.
