She WAS loved, Alan. I toured with her in a beautiful dance-theatre piece created by David Gordon called The Mysteries. I must have seen Alice 4 times in Detroit during the 60s- in Dolly ( she thought they were going to fire her but she got a good notice in the Free Press),in Merman’s Gypsy, in Oliver and most notably in Henry Sweet Henry. Her Mamie Eisenhower in La Chiusa’s First Lady Suite was superb.
