Nationally syndicated columnists (I remember especially Earl Wilson and Walter Winchell) used to cover Broadway news much as Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons did for films. Newspapers in general paid more attention to theater news, Broadway openings and closings. It was not unusual to hear a pundit opine on the latest Williams or Albee play. The Tonight show was based in New York until the end of the sixties and often featured Broadway stars telling of their latest projects in somewhat more detail than they do now on Colbert and Fallon. Other shows originated in New York and would feature Broadway stars and news. Radio too played a part.
