| Saw it Thursday night from fourth row center orchestra seats. Engrossing, interesting story presented by a talented and appealing cast. Having said that, there are echoes of other plays and musicals within this piece which caused my mind to wander a bit to ALL OVER, I NEVER SANG FOR MY FATHER, GYPSY and others. The leading lady who plays both the mother in the early scenes and later one of the four daughters, gives an award worthy performance. She reminded me of Rosalind Russell and Joan Crawford in the early scenes. The problem is the dialect. When they start going at each other in rapid fire, it is unintelligible. The strong lancashire accents might as well be a foreign language. It would help if they could provide English language translation. Worst culprit is the actress playing adult Gloria, who starts out angry and never lets up. I lost about 90 % of her dialogue. I do not think the sound system is at fault. Everyone around us had difficulty with the accents, particularly in the important expository scenes in Act 1. Actress who played Jill was the easiest to understand. But adult Gloria and Ruby? Ouch! Adding to the frustration of so much unintelligible dialogue is the annoyance of the smoking on stage, in some instances chain smoking. The unpleasant odor spread throughout the Auditorium. I left with a headache from it. They need to do a better job keeping the smoke on stage. I would hope the director can work with all the actors to water down the difficult accents and make the play more accessible to the American ear. |
