The first two Encores shows after Lear deBessonet took over were The Tap Dance Kid and The Life, and they were very poorly received. I don't remember a previous time where two consecutive Encores shows both got such negative feedback. She also said some weird thing that was something like all shows that were more than 20 years old were problematic (I tried finding the quote but I couldn't find it - does anyone remember exactly what she said?). It kind of seemed like she might not be a good leader for Encores.

Then Into the Woods was the next Encores show, and it was fantastic, followed by Parade as a special event. Then came Dear World and Oliver, which had some mixed feedback but I think it was generally positive. The next four Encores shows -- Light in the Piazza, Once Upon a Mattress, Jelly's Last Jam, and Titanic -- had some dissenters, but overall, were very well-received (and that run probably was a large factor in her getting the LCT job).

There are some directors who seem to be highly variable (like Sam Gold), and maybe deBessonet is like that as an artistic director. So I guess I don't know whether her LCT run will be more like the awful beginning of her Encores run, or more like the strong end of her run. Apparently, LCT thinks it will be more like the end, but she's only done 3 seasons of Encores so far so the awful beginning wasn't that long ago. I don't feel that confident about her tenure. This feels like a risk to me, even though I guess it doesn't to LCT.
