Both productions had their dubious directorial "touches" that muddled the storytelling. (Mayer had the nonsensical stuff with the elevators in the abduction scene, Sher added this odd dream sequence into the murder scene.) But, I felt the Mayer production was vibrant, imaginative, and it held my interest throughout. The Sher production was drab and ugly (something the Met seems to be doing a lot of these days) and visually very nonspecific. It may have "done the job" as you say, but I didn't feel it brought the story to life in any interesting theatrical way.
