Interesting choices to be sure. Or is that 'To be Sher'? I confess I don't feel a tingle of expectation at the announcement. Sher has done some great work (long ago), but seems past his sell by date - certainly at the Met, and many of his recent musicals. But LCT loves him, so that's kind of an inside job. He knows the place. Lear is someone whose work I have followed for years - always expecting it to rise to greatness, which perhaps it never quite does. INTO THE WOODS was great. MATTRESS best not spoken of.

When I read the announcement, I started thinking who would be the great American directors I might have chosen to head LCT.

For me (and I know these directors can be hit and miss too) I would have found excitement if perhaps Rachel Chavking had gotten the gig, or even (I can hear ATV screams already) Sam Gold - who when he is good (as with ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE, UNCLE VANYA, JOLLYSHIP THE WHIZ BANG) he is very good, indeed. And when he is bad (LOOK BACK IN ANGER) you are furious. Which is good too!

I am cautiously optimistic.

At least LCT hasn't self-immolated, as BAM did when they hired David Binder.
